The gameplay of Pixelmon is centered around the collection, training, and evolution of Pixelmon creatures, as well as the management of land and resources.
The game features several different areas where players can engage in various activities. Hunting grounds are where players can participate in tournaments, teams, and solo battles against other players for cryptocurrency and NFT rewards. Social hubs are places where players can meet their friends, display their items and Pixelmon, and access a full stack of mini-games and social spaces. In addition, players will have access to areas where they can manage their land, build infrastructure, and extract resources. Players will also have the opportunity to explore an open world where they can catch and train their Pixelmon, engage in quests, and collect resources and prizes.
There's also the Battle Arena PvP, where players can engage in player-versus-player battles for higher rewards. In order to progress in the game, players will need to level up their Pixelmon by training them and evolve them by using serums. Players will also be able to earn in-game currency, which can be used to purchase items and resources to help them along the way.
In the world of Pixelmon, there are four different possible origins for any creature: fire, water, earth, and air. Each species is tied to one of these four origins, and the Pixelmons are also split into different rarity tiers, going from common, which is the least rare, to mythical, which is reserved for the elemental dragons. Additionally, each species within generation one has a cap on the number that will ever exist.
As a reward for training and building upon a player's relationship with a Pixelmon, they will be able to evolve them. For Generation 1 to evolve, a player will need a Pixelmon NFT, and a specific serum stage is required to reach the next stage of evolution. During the evolution process, only the serum is burned, leaving the player with two NFTs: their old and their newly evolved Pixelmon. Pixelmon evolution is possible through two mechanisms: serum burn and Pixelmon burn. Serums are the key to evolving a player's Pixelmon to its next level in order to obtain not only a new look but also stat boosts and new abilities. In order to use a serum, a player must also own a Pixelmon NFT and a serum for that generation and the respective stage.
NFTs in Pixelmon are for all the main in-game assets, from land to tools, skins, weapons, and Pixelmons, to allow players to own, trade, and participate in the overall development of the game economy. Land NFTs will also play a key role in the game, enabling player services and resource extraction. Land will be split between urban (yield) and peripheric (resource extraction) types in the game, and a third category called “regions” will be released as the game expands, which will allow for creators to expand the map itself. In addition to the type and split, land will be available in a variety of configurations and sizes.
Pixelmon's token model features a utility token as the main medium of exchange and the core of the game's ecosystem. This utility token, MON, has a capped total supply and will be earned through various in-game activities such as participating in competitions, leaderboard periodic prizes, themed events, battles, selling NFTs, in-game items, and resources. This token will act as the engine of the in-game economy and will enable trades, staking, and exchanges within the Pixelmon world. The game also has a governance token system that is designed to give players the tools to coordinate and actively participate in the governance of the tribes within the game. The main token uses are play and earn rewards, staking and liquidity pool creation, as well as in-game issuance, burns, and buyback mechanics. The utility token can be used for a variety of purposes, such as crafting items and armor, purchasing cosmetic assets, customizing in-game assets, purchasing passes to exclusive events and battles, unlocking quests and champions, upgrading assets, speeding up recovery and travel time, and more.
