Did you know that the ocean holds countless treasures? World of Defish, a fishing simulation game, aims to uncover the loot from the endless sea. If you are looking for a browser game that has GameFi elements and NFT assets, you are in the right place!

How to Start Playing

World of Defish can be accessed directly from the game’s website. You only need to connect your MetaMask wallet and pay a small gas fee to enter the main hub of the game. Here you will be immediately greeted by the fishing map. You can also access the marketplace, your NFT collection, and the workbench. The main goal of the game is to basically catch NFT fish and mine WOD tokens; the native currency of the game. It can be mined in any area of the map and in order to start earning WOD, you need to select a region on the map that is represented by white dots. There are three things you can do to increase your WOD earnings; leveling up, upgrading your equipment, and upgrading your skills.

After selecting a node, you will start fishing, and you will have a chance to catch a fish. This shouldn’t take long, since each area of the map is populated by a certain number of fish. You can use the map to get a lot of information about the area you are going to fish; you can check out the number of players in the area, examine your chances of catching a certain rarity of fish, and view what kind of fish is in that area. After you have caught a fish, you can sell it on the marketplace or stake it to earn tokens, or it can also be used as bait to lure bigger fish.

You can always buy fish from the marketplace if you run out of luck.

Even though some fish can be found everywhere, most of them have certain zones where they can be caught. Every fish is divided into four zones; lake, marine, river, and oceanic. You can try to catch a certain fish from each of these zones. However, it can be a different rarity each time you catch it, and its quality is dependent on your skills and your equipment. Quality varies from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, while the rarities you can find in fish are: common, uncommon, rare, epic, legendary, and artifact. Of course, the rarer and higher quality fish will be much more valuable than an ordinary one. These rarities also apply to equipment too, we will talk about them later.

Zones and Why Do They Matter?

World of Defish is all about the zones, you will spend most of your time in the game looking at the map, searching for the optimal zone to fish. There are a total of ten thousand zones on the map. Zones allow you to farm WOD tokens, get experience points, catch NFT fish, and earn materials for crafting.

You can monitor a zone by simply clicking on it.

If you want to go big and earn lots, you should just buy a zone. You can set an entry fee for other players and populate your zone with valuable fish. A zone price depends on the quality of the fish inside and how well the owner is taking care of the zone. You can also rent the zone if you’d like some more passive income.

Each zone is a place of competition. There are several parameters that will affect how much you get from a certain zone. 

Spending more time in a zone, having higher quality equipment, and being in a zone with fewer players will result in a higher share of earnings. 

Even though you may have found the perfect area for you to get a certain fish with good enough percentages, generally, these areas have a high rate of taxes and are filled with many players, thus lowering your chances and making a dent in your precious wallet.

Equipment and Character Progression

So fishing gives you experience points, and you level up as a result. What do gaining levels allow, you might ask. Accumulating levels is essential for progression. It opens up new fishing zones by allowing access to higher tiers and allows you to have simultaneous sessions so that you are not limited to one farming and fishing zone. In order to fish in higher zones, you will surely need better equipment. 

The game will give you five basic pieces of equipment when you start.

In order to start fishing, you need five main items: a rod, a reel, a line, a hook, and a float. Your starting gear won’t be sufficient enough to keep up with your progress. Their durability will fall off quickly as you try to learn the game. 

Equipment durability directly affects your farming multiplier. 

Every second you use a piece of equipment, its durability decreases. Keeping your gear healthy is a must to ensure your earnings are stable and optimal. You can craft new items and improve them by leveling them up to fifteen with the materials you have extracted. Consumable items such as lures, baits, bite indicators, and fish feeders boxes will improve your fishing performance. There are also certain exclusive nodes that require a boat and a net, which are special items that you need to buy beforehand.

You should choose the item recipes according to the tier you would like to fish in.

In order to keep your items’ durability high, you need to repair them. The repair process is done through the workbench that can be found on the left sidebar of the interface. You can fix your gear however much you like, but I recommend repairing everything all at once so that you won’t be paying for gas more than once.

Keeping your equipment's durability at 100% all the time is the way to go!

Earnings and How You Should Plan Ahead

I played for a week with the basic five main pieces of equipment the game provided me. I paid only the gas fees and participated in fishing in only tier 5 zones. I earned approximately 5 to 10 WOD tokens per hour when I had full durability for my gear. Of course, I had to spend some of my earnings to repair my gear. I was able to fish for about 5 hours each day. At the end of the week, I had about 320 WOD tokens.

I suggest investing a certain amount to buy gear so that you can participate at least in tier 2 or 3 zones. This would make it so that you would be earning a considerable amount compared to your time spent on the game. Since this game doesn’t need a lot of actions performed, meaning your income will be mostly passive, you will be spending less time in-game compared to other games.
